Panaji: State Election Commission on Monday announced that the elections for eleven municipal councils which was scheduled in October has been postponed by three months due to COVID-19 outburst.
State Election Commissioner R K Srivastava told reporters that the elections for eleven municipal councils was scheduled on October 18, 2020, which now stands postponed for three months.
Srivastava said that the exact dates for the elections would be announced later on, depending on the COVID-19 pandemic situation in the state.
He said that the tenure of all these eleven municipal councils is getting over on November 04.
Goa has 12 municipal councils and a corporation of city of Panaji.
Srivastava said that the municipal councils at Pernem, Mapusa, Bicholim, Valpoi, Margao, Cuncolim, Mormugao, Quepem, Curchorem-Cacora, Sanguem and Canacona.
The commissioner said that the Returning Officers and Assistant Returning Officers were supposed to be appointed by this time to conduct the election, if it was held as per schedule. “But since all the officers are extremely busy in covid management, we have decided not to overburden them,” he said.
Srivastava said that the elections were also postponed considering the safety of the voters, who would move out for polling.
