Superintendent of Police (South) Tikam Singh Verma told reporters in Margao on Wednesday that Police Sub Inspector Nilesh Shirvaikar has been placed under suspension over the incident that occurred on October 22.

The family members of the victim Edburg Pereira have claimed that he was brutally assaulted in the police custody due to which he skull broke.
Pereira is currently admitted in Goa Medical College and Hospital, near here.
The opposition parties including Aam Aadmi Party has demanded that offence of attempt to murder should be registered against the PSI who broke skull of the accused in the police custody.

Verma talking to reporters in Margao stated that the victim was brought to the police station on October 22 after a Police Control Room received a call that Pereira was creating nuisance in public under influence of alcohol.

The SP said that when he was brought to the police station, he started creating nuisance despite the PSI, who is now suspended, trying to calm him down.
“The accused fell in the police station and received the head injury after which he was shifted to the hospital,” he said.

The mother of the victim, however, claimed that her son was chained and beaten up by police in the lock up. She said that the PSI brutally assaulted him breaking open his skull.
AAP leaders including party’s Goa unit president Amit Palekar and Navelim-based leader Siddhesh Bhagat visited Goa Medical College and Hospital.

Palekar demanded that the offence of attempt to murder under BNS should be registered against the PSI and his suspension alone is not enough.
“Pereira was beaten up in the police custody. It amounts to attempt to murder,” he said, questioning the silence of CM Dr Pramod Sawant over the incident.
He said that the lawlessness is increasing in the state while police are beating up innocent citizens.
