Porvorim: A team of officials from local panchayats, district administration and police have been formed to respond to the covid-19 situation in Porvorim Assembly constituency.

A meeting chaired by MLA Rohan Khaunte discussed the measures to be taken in coordination with all the departments to respond to the pandemic and also work towards its control in Porvorim constituency.

The assembly constituency which came little late on the radar of covid-19 pandemic in the state has witnessed sudden surge in the cases. Khaunte said that there is no clarity on exact number of cases, while the response mechanism of the state government is lackluster.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Collector (Bardez)Mamu Hage, DySP Edwin Colaco, Dr Sikander Talwar of Health department and other government officials.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, Khaunte though the number of cases are increasing, there is no clarity on exact number in his constituency.

“We also don’t know what is the response mechanism, if any fresh cases surfaces.”

He said that the Deputy Collector has taken the meeting which is continuation of the meeting which we held earlier with the panch members in presence of Mamlatdar.

“There are lot of people who are in fear and anxiety. We have taken certain pro-active measures keeping in mind what the figures are.”

“Today the figures are approximately 24. I have been made to understand that there is shortage of bed. As regards to the contact tracing, we have asked them to expedite it. Health department is having shortage of doctors, for which, we need to assist them and organize through government,” he said.

“We have also asked to seal certain areas which has mass contacts, which the deputy collector will issue required circular,” he added.

Khaunte said that there is panic amongst the people as nobody is in the loop of what is happening. “We have decided to form a team which will be coordinating with the ward members, understand the issues and decide the action.”

“We have asked Deputy collector to initiate through the taluka to create awareness, inform the public whatever that is required to be done.”

Khaunte said that three day lockdown will not help us anyways. “We need to be taking precautions anywhere. I am trying to create logistics of essentials through supermarkets.”

“We need to remain at home, safe and take care and maintain social distance and maintain hygienic condition,” he added.

“The number of cases are going to peak. I had predicted this in April-May month based on the statements of Director of AIIMS. Let us all collectively work together.”

Khaunte said that he has called upon Panchayat members, volunteers to assist people. “Whichever areas would be sealed, will be provided with essential commodities.”
