Panaji: Controversial anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) leader Ramakrishna Jalmi was on Friday booked by Calangute police for spreading fake whatsapp message on #COVID-19.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (Porvorim) Edwin Colaco said that Jalmi was booked after he circulated a fake message claiming that a person from Calangute was COVID-19 patient.

Earlier this month, Jalmi was arrested for his derogatory statement against Lord Parshuram during anti-CAA rally in South Goa.

Colaco said that on Friday, he was booked under section 188 and 505 (B) of Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Colaco said that Jalmi had shared wrong information on whatsapp group named “Just Political” in which he had shared a false information about a person from Calangute being infected by Coronavirus.

“He created fear and panic in the society which has potential danger for maintanance of normal law and order in society and also amongst the residents of Calangute village and its surrounding areas, thereby contravening orders issued by the District Magistrate under section 144 of CrPC,”he said.

The DySP said that the group administrators was called personally urging him to delete the post. “But administrator did not do anything after which the case was booked,” he said.

“I independently  verified the information through Police Inspector and it was found to be false news,” he said.

Colaco said that all the group administrators are likely to be booked along with Jalmi by police during the investigation.
