Panaji: Congress party has demanded that Goan parliamentarian in Portuguese parliament, eminent economist, historian and writed Dr Francisco Luis Gomes be honoured by observing his 150th death anniversary on September 30. .
Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar has written letter to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant in this regard.
“We request you to Commemorate the 150th Death Anniversary of the greatest Goan Dr. Francisco Luis Gomes who made Goa proud Globally in the 19th Century, let our new generation know about Dr. Gomes’s Contribution. You are also requested to write to the Prime Minister to honour Dr. Francosco Luis Gomes in memory of this great patriot considering his contribution to inspire freedom fighters nationally and internationally,” Chodankar demanded.
He said that Dr. Gomes was one of the most prominent intellectuals, and an illustrious parliamentarian who represented Goa in the Portuguese Parliament in Lisbon. He was lauded as the “Prince of Intellectuals” in Europe for his remarkable contributions in the fields of philosophy and economics, he said.
Chodankar demanded that Gomes ancestral house at Navelim be taken over to build an International Memorial and Francisco Luis Gomes centre for studies in political economy be established at any prominent College.
Chodankar demanded that his complete published works now scattered and out of print to be a collected and published in English, Konkani and Marathi by state government as a single volume, “collected works of dr francisco luis gomes” by Directorate of Art and Culture. A documentary on his life and work be commissioned in English and Konkani be prepared, he said.
