Panaji: Congress in Goa on Wednesday announced that they would be contesting upcoming Zilla Panchayat election in around 40 out of 50 constituencies.
Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Girish Chodankar told a press conference in Panaji that party will contest on around 40 seats, while in rest of the ten, it would support anti-BJP face.
He said that the party would not contest in those ZP constituencies, where it does not have a “strong candidate.”
When asked whether the party will have alliance with parties like Goa Forward Party with whom they have understanding on the floor of the House, Chodankar replied in negative.
“The united opposition in the assembly is a different case. It is a part of floor coordination, as it is done even in Parliament. But as far as ZP election is concerned, we will not have alliance with them,” he said.
Chodankar, however, said that the party might align with Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), after consulting the Congress block presidents from the constituencies where it (MGP) as a presence.
“As far as we are concerned, the target is to defeat BJP in the ZP election,” he said.
The ZP elections in Goa would be held on March 22 while next day, the votes would be counted.
BJP has also announced that they would be contesting the election by fielding their candidates. The party is yet to announce in how many constituencies they will field the candidates.
