Panaji: Highlighting the failures of the BJP government, Congress MLAs met the Governor on Tuesday and urged him to address pressing issues affecting Goa’s image.
Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao, Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira, and Quepem MLA Altone D’Costa met Governor Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju and submitted a memorandum requesting action.
Yuri Alemao drew the Governor’s attention to governance failures, corruption, the collapse of law and order, environmental damage, and threats to Goa’s identity, expressing hope that, as the constitutional head of the state, he would uphold the Constitution’s spirit and protect the interests of Goa’s people.
Alemao noted multiple issues concerning public safety, environmental protection, fiscal stability, and the state’s social fabric.
He pointed out that instead of addressing these issues, the BJP government was focused on events and commissions, which do not benefit the common man, while important matters were being ignored.
He added that Goa has witnessed a disturbing rise in violent assaults, organized crime, drug-related offences, land and real-estate frauds, and night-time violence.
Women, citizens, and social activists have reported delayed police action, undermining public confidence in the justice system.
Alemao highlighted the Arpora fire incident as an example of systemic corruption and negligence, stating that the incident exposed the BJP government’s failure to prevent illegalities that ultimately resulted in the loss of innocent lives.
He also noted that despite public assurances, the government has failed to regulate coal handling at Mormugao Port and control coal-related pollution, causing environmental and health problems due to inadequate safeguards, weak enforcement, and lack of transparent monitoring.
The Leader of Opposition raised concerns over the state’s rising debt levels, pointing out that borrowings are being used primarily for salaries, pensions, and routine expenditure rather than creating durable assets. Rising interest liabilities are squeezing funds for health, education, and infrastructure, raising questions about the state’s financial sustainability.
Finally, Alemao emphasized that the government has failed to address road accidents and ensure a safe environment for the public and tourists.
