Panaji: As the day long political developments prevailed in the state, Congress party in Goa on Sunday announced removal of their leader Michael Lobo from the post of Leader of Opposition as its legislative party was on the verge of a split.

The development comes in the wake of an attempt to split the Congress Legislative Party in the state.

Party’s Goa Desk Incharge Dinesh Gundu Rao told reporters in Panaji that two of its leaders including Lobo and former chief minister Digambar kamat were hatching conspiracy by hobnobbing with BJP to ensure defection in the party.

Rao said that the party has decided to remove Lobo from the post of Leader of Opposition. He stated that the party will take action against both its leaders – Kamat and Lobo.

While rumours were rife about major split in the Congress Legislative Party, Rao admitted that five MLAs including Lobo, Kamat, Kedar Naik, Rajesh Faldesai and Delialah Lobo were not in touch with the party, while five other MLAs including Altone D’Costa, Sankalp Amonkar, Yuri Alemao, Carlose Alvares Ferreira, Rudolf Fernandes were present for the press conference.

Rao said that sixth MLA Aleixo Sequeira was in touch with them and was very much with the Congress Legislative party.

The ruling BJP currently enjoys support of 20 of its own MLAs, two from MGP and three Independents. Congress had won on eleven seats during March Assembly polls, GFP on one, Revolutionary Goans on one and AAP two.
