Chapora: Chapora Jetty is posing a serious threat to public safety as iron sheets from the jetty shed are falling onto the ground due to severe rusting. The deteriorating structure has become a major risk for fishermen, fish sellers, and members of the public who use the jetty daily.

The unsafe condition of the shed has raised fears of a major accident at any time. Locals have said that the jetty is in urgent need of renovation, warning that continued neglect could lead to an untoward incident.

The issue was highlighted by Ankit Salgaonkar, a resident of Chapora, who urged the Fisheries Department to take immediate corrective measures in the interest of public safety.

Meanwhile, local fish sellers have expressed strong concern over the prolonged delay in repairs, stating that nearly two years have passed with no improvement in the condition of the jetty. They pointed out that although the foundation stone for renovation and beautification work was laid in November by the Fisheries Minister along with the local MLA, no actual work has begun so far.

With the New Year already underway, locals have said that there are no visible signs of action on the ground, adding to their frustration.

Responding to the concerns, Siolim MLA Delilah Lobo stated that the renovation of Chapora Jetty and construction of the shed will commence once the Coastal Regulation Zone NOC is received.

Until then, fishermen and vendors continue to operate under unsafe conditions and are repeatedly appealing to the authorities to act before a tragedy strikes.
