Canacona: The heavy traffic on National Highway 66 connecting Goa to Karnataka was affected since the wee hours of Wednesday, after a bridge collapsed.
A senior police official from Karwar (Karnataka) said that old bridge on Kali River at Sadashivgad in Karnataka, collapsed around 1 am last night.
He said that a truck lorry which was crossing the bridge fell into the water, while its driver was rescued by local fishermen.
The old bridge was used for one-way traffic after construction of a new one, a decade back, he said. “The old bridge was used by the traffic which was coming to Goa,” he said.
Karwar police said that the traffic on new bridge was stopped for some time during the wee hours, but now the vehicles, except heavy ones, are allowed to cross the bridge.
Goa’s Canacona police station incharge Harish Raut Desai said that the traffic on new bridge is restricted as Karnataka government is checking stability of the new bridge, after the collapse of the old one.
He said that Goa police continuously coordinating with their Karwar counterpart to monitor the situation on the Highway.
