Borim accident: Union demands compensation, replacement of age-old electricity dept vehicles

Margao: While demanding compensation for the families of the workmen who lost their lives in Borim mishap, Electricity Employees Union (Goa) on Saturday said that the department should immediately replace the old vehicles.

General Secretary of the union Adv Raju Mangueshkar, addressing a press conference in Margao, demanded that the staff, who are designated to erect poles, should not be asked to travel in the same truck as that of the material.

“Provide separate vehicle for transportation of staff,” he said.

Mangueshkar said that the vehicles used by Electricity department are age old ones, some as old as 25-30 years, which needs to be replaced immediately.

“Number of representations made by the union seeking replacement of those old and outdated vehicles have fallen on deaf ears of the authorities,” he said.

Mangueshkar accused Engineer of negligence due to which, the accident occurred. “Therefore Chief Minister should appoint an enquiry into the irresponsible behaviour of the high ranking officials.”

He has also demanded compensation of Rs 50 lakh for the families of deceased and Rs 20 lakh for those injured in the accident.
