Panaji: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Goa have objected to the decision of its own government to make pre-marriage counselling mandatory in the state.

BJP Goa State President Sadanand Tanavade on Thursday told PTI that such a step would create “hassles” for the couples, who are heading for the marriage.

State Law Minister Nilesh Cabral, earlier this week, had claimed that the pre-marriage counselling would be made mandatory in the state considering the “quick divorces” reported in the recent times. He had said that the divorces happen, sometimes, within 6 months to one year of the marriage.

“We (BJP party) are opposed to the idea of pre marriage counselling. The party has already taken up the issue with the chief minister,” Tanavade said.

He said that such a process of going through pre-marriage counselling will create “hassles” for the couples before their wedding.

Tanavade said that the party has extensively put forth their opinion before the chief minister.
