Panaji: BJP MLA Joshua De Souza was elected as Deputy Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly defeating Congress candidate Delialah Lobo.
The election for the post of Deputy Speaker was held during the ongoing monsoon session of Goa Legislative Assembly.
De Souza polled 24 votes while Lobo was supported by 12 opposition MLAs. Two members of Aam Admi Party and lone MLA of Revolutionary Goans Party, both belonging to the opposition benches, abstained from voting on the floor of the House.
The 33-year-old MLA was congratulated by Speaker of Legislative Assembly Ramesh Tawadkar and other members after his victory in the poll.
De Souza represents Mapusa Assembly constituency in North Goa for the second consecutive term. He was elected as MLA in the year 2019 after death of his father, Francis De Souza, who was then minister in State cabinet.
