Vasco: A 26-year-old student of BITS Pilani near Vasco town was killed while another sustained grievous injuries after their motorcycle rammed into a moving oil tanker near Zuari Nagar in South Goa, police said.
The accident occurred around 5:15 pm on Saturday near a junction at Upasnagar in Zuari Nagar, according to Verna Police.
Police said that the accused tanker driver, identified as Pedro Ivo Medeira (66), a resident of Raia in Salcete (South Goa), was proceeding from Upasnagar towards BITS Pilani. Police said that upon reaching the junction, he allegedly took a right turn to enter the company premises without ensuring the safety of oncoming traffic.
At that time, a motorcycle rode by Karan Narasimha Murthy (26) coming from BITS Pilani towards Verna collided with the rear left side of the tanker. Karan along with pillion rider Soham Adhikari (26) another student of BITS Pillani, suffered grievous injuries.
Police said that both sustained grievous injuries and were rushed for medical treatment. Murthy, who is originally from Mysore (Karnataka) later succumbed to his injuries at the South Goa District Hospital in Margao, while Adhikari, who is living at Ponda in South Goa, is undergoing treatment at Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim, near Panaji.
The tanker driver was arrested in connection with the incident and later released on bail, police said.
