BITS Pilani Goa Student Found Hanging in Hostel; Sixth Suicide in Three Years

VASCO: A third-year girl student of the BITS Pilani institute at Vasco in South Goa allegedly committed suicide by hanging inside her hostel room on Sunday night, police said.

This is the sixth case of suicide reported on the BITS Pilani Goa campus in the last three years.

A senior police officer on Monday stated that the girl, identified as Vishnavi Jitesh, was found hanging from a ceiling fan using bedsheets in her hostel room around midnight on Sunday.

Verna police received a call at around 11.30 pm on Sunday informing them that the student had allegedly hung herself in her room, the officer said.

Police said the student was studying in the third year of the Electronics and Communication Engineering course at BITS Pilani.

She originally hails from Bengaluru, Karnataka.

This is the sixth case of suicide reported on the BITS Pilani campus.

The issue of student suicides at the campus was raised during the recently held Assembly session. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had told the Assembly that students had taken the extreme step due to examination pressure.

BITS Pilani is yet to issue any formal statement on the recent case.
