Karnataka: The Karnataka Excise Department recently seized 138.06 liters of Goa-registered liquor from a car in Kagodu, a town in Shivamogga’s Sagar district. Pramod Vishwanath Juwekar from Betul, Goa, was arrested in connection with this incident. The car, with registration number GA 08 F 3312, was stopped near a field close to the crematorium in Kagodu, Sagar, after the excise department received a tip-off.
The accused, Pramod Juwekar, has been booked under various sections of the Karnataka Excise Act, 1965. He has been remanded in judicial custody. The operation was carried out by Excise Deputy Superintendent Sheela Darjkar, Inspector Bhagyalakshmi, and other staff members.
This incident highlights the ongoing issue of liquor smuggling from Goa into Karnataka. Interestingly, there are reports suggesting that Goa officials themselves are involved in trafficking cheap liquor into Karnataka for higher profits. Karnataka’s Chief Minister has also directed officials to take strict measures against liquor smuggling from Goa.
