Panaji, March 30: Goa police on Saturday arrested a senior official of All India Football Federation in connection with assault on two women players during Indian Women’s League which was held in Goa, this week.
Deputy superintendent of police (Mapusa) Sandesh Chodankar told that Deepak Sharma, a member of executive committee of AIFF, was called for questioning during the day on Saturday, after formal complaint was received against him.
Chodankar said that he was arrested by Mapusa police under various sections including causing hurt, causing force against the woman and other charges.
Mapusa Police Inspector Shitakant Naik said that he would remain in the custody tonight and would be presented before the court for remand on Sunday. “We will be interrogating him in the custody,” he said.
The incident reportedly happened on Thursday night in a room where the players playing for Khad FC were staying. As per the police complaint filed with Mapusa police on Friday, Sharma physically assaulted both the women players, over petty matter.
Goa Football Association (GFA) which is a local host for Indian Women’s League had intervened on Friday after they were informed by the players. GFA President Caetano Fernandes told that the association helped the victims to file the complaint with Mapusa police station.
He accused AIFF Executive Committee member Valanka Alemao of trying to convince the players against filing the complaint by visiting them in the hotel.
“We were told by the players that Alemao tried to convince them not to file the complaint. One of the victim has even recorded her conversation,” he said.
