Panaji: An accused in a land-grabbing case, who was arrested by Goa police after remaining absconding for more than four years, managed to escape from custody along with a constable on Friday, a senior police official said.
Superintendent of Police (Crime Branch) Rahul Gupta told reporters on Friday that the accused, Siddiquie Suleman Khan (55), who was arrested after four and a half years of absconding, fled from police custody.
He was arrested on November 12, 2024, by the Special Investigation Team of the Crime Branch in connection with three different land-grab cases filed against him.
Gupta said that Khan was a proclaimed offender and had been in police custody for the last 30 days at the Crime Branch.
The SP said that, as per the information received, at around 2:30 a.m. on Friday, constable Amit Naik, attached to the India Reserve Battalion (IRB), unlocked Khan from custody and escaped along with him from the Crime Branch using his bike.
Gupta said that the First Information Report (FIR) has been filed at the Old Goa police station regarding the escape, and all borders have been sealed to prevent them from crossing.
“All-out efforts are underway to trace the accused persons. The whole Goa Police is unitedly working in coordination with neighboring state police to trace and apprehend the accused as soon as possible,” he said.
Gupta added that a report will be submitted to senior officials for suitable disciplinary action against the accused IRB constable.
He said that a detailed inquiry will be conducted by senior Crime Branch officials in the matter.
