A Laudable Endeavor: HPV Vaccination Drive Illuminates Wadem Dhavli, Phonda

In a heartening display of community spirit and medical dedication, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Bicholim branch, in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Dona Paula and with the support of Manipal Hospital, organised a life-saving cervical cancer (HPV) vaccination programme for young girls aged 9–14 years at the Matruchaya institution, Wadem Dhavli, Phonda. This noble initiative witnessed the administration of the second dose of the HPV vaccine to 16 girls who had received their first dose six months prior.

The vaccination drive was led by Dr. Shekhar Salkar, Oncosurgeon and President of the IMA Bicholim branch, along with Rtn Dr. Elaine Rodrigues, Coordinator, and Rtn Dr. Sajal Dhond. The event was attended by Rotary Club of Dona Paula President Rtn Azeema Kulkarni, Rtn Sagar Kulkarni, Rtn Felipe Alvares, Rtn Janvi Shah, Rtn Vishwesh Kamat, and Rtn Gaytri Mamat.

Dr. Salkar highlighted the importance of HPV vaccination in preventing cervical cancer, which is the second most prevalent cancer in India. He appreciated the central and state governments for introducing free HPV vaccination for girls at government health centres.

Rtn Azeema Kulkarni expressed gratitude to the Matruchaya group for their support in organising the event. Refreshments were provided by the Matruchaya staff.
