Canacona: Cyber Crime police on Saturday arrested a 20-year-old from Canacona in South Goa for posting sexually explicit material on his social media handle, a senior official said.
Superintendent of Police (Cyber Crime) Rahul Gupta said that Vinay Gaonkar, who is residing at Nanem, Gaodongrim in Canacona taluka (South Goa) was arrested after a complaint was registered against him by a woman living in Margao town of posting sexually explicit material.
He said that the Cyber Crime Police had registered case on April 16, 2024 against the Instagram handle after the woman accused it of transmitting obscene material containing sexually explicit content.
The complaint also mentioned that the accused bullied the victim, he said.
Gupta said that the accused was identified through examination of social media records and was arrested at Canacona, which is his native.
The SP said that the accused is a student of Industrial Training Institute and has confessed to his crime.
Police have recovered chats of the victim and the alleged obscene videos on the accused phone. “Phone will be sent for cyber forensics examination,” he said.
Gupta said that the accused created Instagram ID using fake name and developed friendship with the complainant and further transmitted objectionable chats and videos through social media platform, Instagram to induce the complainant for sexual favor.
The SP has said that general public are advised to be cautious of such fake account on social media.
“Verify the authenticity of any accounts on social media before engaging in video chats or any further communication,” he added.
