Panaji: In what can break the monopoly of tourist taxi operators, Goa government has decided to formulate a scheme providing financial assistance to the locals who intend to buy the vehicle and run it as taxi.

Goa Tourism Development Corporation has sought to break ice with tourist taxi operators who are opposing the App-based service in the state.

GTDC Chairman Dayanand Sopte and Managing Director Nikhil Desai met chief minister Pramod Sawant over the issue.

Addressing a press conference, Sopte said that chief minister has designed a scheme providing financial help to the locals who intend to buy vehicle. “They can buy the vehicle at subsidized rate and use it as taxi, creating employment opportunities,” he said.

Sopte said that the tourist taxi operators are being misguided by some people. “I appeal them to join App-based taxi service for one month and see the benefits,” he said.

He also said that some of the taxi operators were spoiling the name of Goa and tourists are afraid to visit the state.

Sopte said that App-based taxi service has been an accepted norm across the world and in India. “Even those Goans who go to other cities use the App-based taxi service and they are happy about it,” he said.

  1. I dont understand why the ministers are not understanding the basic difference that Goa works on season and off season. They oprrators have to earn in season and survive the off season. The other states it is business for 24* 7 * 365. Look at the situation of the cab drivera of Old and user they are tryong hard to leave ola Uber and come to Goa for work. Bcoz the pain they are going through bcoz of competition.

  2. If govt is coming with a financial scheme to buy vehicle for unemployed youth and if it can be used as taxi then its great idea as person disable like me can think of applying for the scheme and give helping hand to my wife and to give good education to my 12 year daughter also.side by side i can employ person to take care of the business.
