Panaji: Congress party on Wednesday termed the meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Goa mining dependents and lawmakers as ‘election gimmick.’

Modi met the leaders of Goa Mining People’s Front (GMPF), three members of parliament – Shripad Naik, Vinay Tendulkar and Narendra Sawaikar – in Delhi.

The Prime Minister has assured to look into the matter of resumption of mining activity in Goa.

“All of this is election gimmicks. When thousands of people were sitting in protest at Delhi, PM had no time to meet them,” All India Congress Committee Secretary A Chellakumar told reporters in Panaji on Wednesday.

He was referring to the protest held by GMPF in Delhi in December last year.

“If PM really wanted, he could have met them (protestors).  Today’s meeting is just a political gimmick ahead of Lok Sabha polls,” he said.

Chellakumar said that BJP or PM has not given any solution during today’s meeting. “They are not  going to resolve the issue,” he added.

The Congress leader alleged that BJP did not try to work out any solution for mining crisis despite knowing in advance that Supreme court is going to quash the mining leases.
