Congress supports GMPF for bandh on February 26

Panaji: Congress party on Monday announced their support to the Bandh call given by Goa Mining People’s Front on February 26 demanding resumption of the Iron Ore mining in the State.

GMPF has decided to shut down the areas of mining belt comprising of Quepem, Sanguem,Dharbandora, Bicholim areas in protest against government’s failure to resume the mining in the State.

Supreme Court in February last year quashed 88 mining leases bringing to halt the entire industry. The people dependent on this industry has demanded that BJP-led government in the State and Centre should work out solution to resume the activity.

“Goa Pradesh Congress Committee’s Office bearers’ meeting held on Monday has resolved to support the call of bandh given by GMPF on February 26,” Congress Goa Spokesman Sunil Kavathankar told reporters.

“As Congress party is sympathetic and concerned towards the cause of mining dependents, GPCC today has resolved to support the bandh call given by Goa Mining People’s Front,” he said.

The meeting was chaired by GPCC President Girish Chodankar in presence of All India Congress Committee Secretary A Chellakumar in Panaji.

“GPCC paid tribute to the brave soldiers martyred in Pulwama attack and also to the other soldiers who have made supreme sacrifice for the nation recently,” Kavathankar said.

congress also condoled the passing away of former Deputy Speaker Vishnu Wagh and former Deputy chief minister Francis D’Souza, he said.
