Panaji: Goa will host the annual Carnival float parade across the coastal state from March 02 onwards, State Tourism Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar said.

Ajogankar told reporters that the tourism industry is looking at getting a good number of footfalls and reverse the trend of falling number of visitors through Carnival festivities.

Tourism stakeholders had claimed that the just-concluded Christmas and New Year period failed to enthuse the tourism industry in the State known for its beaches and night long parties.

The minister said that the internationally famed Carnival float parades which would be held in Goa will help to reverse the trend of tourism downfall.

“This season we saw a bit of low tourism footfalls. We expect that the Carnival festival will make up for the loss,” Ajgaonkar said.

The float parades across the State will begin from Panaji on March 02 when a person designated as King Momo would herald the four-day-long festivities, he said.

The float parade in Margao (South Goa) would be held on March 03, Vasco (South Goa) on March 04 and on March 05 at Mapusa, Morjim (both in North Goa) and Curchorem (South Goa).

Ajgaonkar said that the Carnival floats, this time, would reflect Goa’s culture.

The tourism department has also decided to market the Carnival festival across the world, specially amongst the international travelers.

“We will be promoting Carnival  nationally and internationally,” he said.

Ajgaonkar said that the State government has budged an expenditure of Rs 1.42 crore for the float parades while main float of King Momo and the beautification would cost another Rs 1.5 crore.
