Beach Shacks to be erected before arrival of first Chartered flight

Panaji: With the maiden flight for the season chartered by tourists expecting to arrive in the first week of October, State tourism department has decided to allot the beach shacks by September 15.

State Tourism Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar today said that allotment of shacks on the beaches would be done in time bound manner by September 15. On Seasonal basis, the department allots the shacks on the beaches who are given demarcated area to put up their structure.

The minister has asked all the shack owners to follow and comply with the rules and guidelines mandated in Goa Shack Policy.

Goa attracts around 900 charters every season from different countries including Russia and UK, which bring in the foreign tourists to the beaches of Goa. The beach shacks are palm thatched structures which are erected on the beach which serves liquor and food.

Cruz Cardoso, Shack Owners’ Welfare Society of Goa, a union of beach shack owners, said that the State government allocating the permission to erect the structures much b efore the first chartered flight arrives will help the business.

“The first chartered flight is arriving in the first week of October. The demarcation of shacks will happen from September 20 which means before the flight lands, the structures would be ready,” he said.

As per the State government records, there are 360 beach shacks which are erected seasonally on the various beaches across the State.

He said that many a times tourists inquire whether the shacks have come up before booking their ticket to Goa. “For many travelers, Goa means beach and beach means a shack where they can relax,” he said.

Cardoso said that the shack owners have always been demanding that the permissions to erect structures and subsequent demarcation of the area should be done much before the tourist season starts, with the arrival of chartered flight.
